We’re back!

I‘ve been working away on an animation about DNA, and in the evenings, tweaking my new blogging app, WordPress, which supports easy inline posting of Flash! ..So things might just get a bit more.. animated around here.

  • Hey thanks! I checked out your site, and I loved all the fantastic caricature work! Something I have trouble with for sure.

    I’m actually using this plugin:
    http://macdiggs.com/index.php/2006/09/13/easy-inline-swf-10-plugin-for-wordpress/
Fairly easy to install and use. It only works with Flash MX (Version 6) though!

Download it, unzip it, and upload it into your WP plugins directory. Activate it through your plugins panel.

I’ve hung onto my copy of Flash MX, because it was the last version that they still kept the old flash 4 drawing engine. It’s far more precise. Flash 8 tries to reduce the overall number of points in a drawing, and smooths out your lines in an annoying way, if you’re used to doing nice tapered brush work.

You can still export flash 6 ouy of version 8, I’m sure everyone knows this, but you have to have any and all flash 8 special effects turned off. (Filters, blurs, and anything done with the new line tool that uses “miter” sharp line points.)

Have you seen John Krisfaluski’s blog? Lots of crazy caricature there.. sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it.. I have a great admiration for people who can nail something so well, that they don’t have to put a “badge” on a caricature. For example a “Bush” nametag, badge or button on a drawing that signifies the drawing is President Bush. Sort of a copout! -That’s taken from a pal of mine, Matt who does political cartooning professionally.

Anyway, good luck with that flash plugin, it dosen’t work with all templates, and I’m still in the progress of tweaking things…

  • Thanks for the info. I appreciate you explaining it. I’ll give it a try and get back to you.

The word “caricature” tends to mean different things to almost everybody I’ve encountered; whether online or otherwise. Some people think of them as portraits. Others think of all the exxagerated stuff (giant chins and whatnot). My versions are cartoons. That way, if it doesn’t look just like the person, I can say that it’s a “cartoonish representation”.

I’ve seen John K’s stuff. He’s brilliant with everything he’s made. His blog covers alot of different things about the cartooning world that people take for granted. I’ve certianly learned alot! All I need to do now is apply it *heh*.
