Flash / Sketchbook tutorial #1

I've had a number of requests for tutorials on the site, and I recently recorded this little cartooning demonstration using camstudio. Apologies for the video quality, and low audio volume.. Also, I do tend to ramble on. . .. just turn off the sound if you like.. :-)

Awesome man... Now that you've posted a tutorial, your site is going to get flooded. Nice and to the point. I've seen alot of tutorials, and I'll say, you didnt seem to ramble to me... Great Job. Love to see more.

Thanks a lot, Chad!

That's making things much clearer...

Nice to watch you drawing live!

Chad, Thank you for the QT Movie! I'm a fan of your blog and would like to see more of your workflow with Flash. Thanks again!

Love the tutorial! let me know if you are giving any cartooning classes in the area.

Chad, if you could mention on your tutorials what type of computer you are using ie, tablet pc, and or desktop computer. and a brief description on your system. I am starting to follow your art and have not seen any where anything on your hardware, thanks in advance. keep up the good work

Nice Chad, this was a great video, very inspiring. One thing that really caught my eye was how smooth the paintbrush tool was in Flash. I use a 6x9 wacom tablet and I don't get nearly as smooth line quality. Are you using a tablet pc for this? If so, do you notice a significant difference in stroke quality compared to a tablet?

Cheers.

Thanks for the comment Brad.

I do everything on a Motion Computing LE 1600 Tablet PC that has a wide-angle "view anywhere" LCD screen. Very bright, and amazingly clear to look at.
I also use "tabtip-tamer" an app I wrote to tame the task priority of the tablet's input panel, (the tip) -so that it dosen't, end up interfering with line quality in vector applications.

I do believe having a tablet-pc makes a gigantic difference in line quality, also I tend to zoom in when I draw, and make my brush strokes quickly. Speed + zooming in t drawing directly on the screen = smooth fidelity in flash. No question.
I also use a paintbrush and ink when I do cartooning on paper, which took years to master, and I think that experience helps a great deal as well.
Hope that helps!

Best,
Chad Essley

Hi,

Great tutorial. But, can you make it available for download? I would love to expand the video a bit, to make it easy to see.

Thanks.

Hey Michael:
The direct download link is:

I use a firefox extension called "Download Embedded" to snag any embedded media that I want to save for later. Try it out! I'm going to work on some more tutorials when I get a few free moments too, hopefully with better video.. :-o
Stay tuned! http://www.aeruder.net/software/extensions/extensionlist.html
