Boycott Whole Foods!
At first I thought this might be a little too Portland-centric to post, and really off topic, but I thought it might be important enough news to spread around a bit.
Imagine a cross between the organic products that Whole Foods carries, and a conventional grocery store. One focused on local products, with a fairly friendly, happy staff. There you’ll have New Seasons Market. Sure, they’re expensive, and I don’t shop there all the time.. but when you want to go in for the really nice stuff, you can hit up Whole Foods. (Really our best and least expensive produce in town comes from some of our Asian Markets, and Supermarkets slightly off the beaten path) However..
Also, Whole Foods CEO evidently has a history of being sort of a stupid wanker.
If it makes anyone feel slightly better, they might be losing the battle..
Spread the word!

Oh for the… “I want to be the Microsoft of natural foods?” Good choice of words, there, bucko.

Okay, hm. I’d heard of some of WF’s previous shenanigans (like the CEO sockpuppeting/astroturfing on various organic food weblogs and the like) but this is way over-the-top.
It’s rather disappointing, as Whole Foods is one of the better stores here in San Francisco, at least when it comes to quality and price (Safeway is just as expensive but way lower-quality). But this sort of behavior is abhorrent and should not be tolerated one bit.
I used to live upstairs from a Whole Foods and so I shopped there as my main grocery store. A few months ago I moved and Safeway became my regular stop, with Whole Foods just an occasional out-of-the-way place. Now I don’t think I’ll be going there at all. I guess I’ll have to just start putting up with Trader Joe’s instead (or maybe finally try out Rainbow which I’m always hearing good things about).

It’s tough, because Whole Foods is often the only game in town, natural-foods-wise. We’re lucky to live in crazy whack whack Portland where we have a number of options in this regard — and very little local tolerance for this variety of corporate bullying.

Yeah, I’m actually a bit surprised at the state of things in San Francisco. I mean, here there’s several farmer’s markets (which are great if you happen to be able to go when they’re open), but as far as natural-foods grocers there’s just Whole Foods, Rainbow, and a few tiny mediocre places which try really hard to be confused with Whole Foods.
Although, huh, looking into it again, Rainbow is even closer to my commute than I thought (and is actually less out of the way than Whole Foods). I guess I’ll start going there! (Although they don’t sell meat or chocolate.)

Man, this clinches my general dislike of Whole Foods.
WF, you are hereby banz0red. ANd it’s gonna suck for me too because I do tend to frequent them since they are bloody close.
It’s not like Walmart that’s in Clackamas anyway.
Great post, Chadrick!!! Consider it passeded on.
