Rest in Peace, Macromedia Flash

And I say, Macromedia Flash, because that was the last time that Flash was good.. for animators!

Everyone was a bit taken aback when Adobe bought Macromedia.. Surely they’d address some long standing concerns, and make the greatest software even better.. right?

rip

Wrong! Make that 100% dead WRONG. The latest version of Abobe Flash CS4 is just astoundingly terrible. Everything about this release is bloatware personified. From the new tear away menu system (including a moveable timeline that can’t be turned off) to the new “bones” system.. almost every single “feature” added for animators is a complete and utter disappointment.

The program runs unacceptably well on a quad core machine with a fantastic (and expensive) graphics card, and well, I’m just floored.

Goodbye Adobe Flash, so long to an animation community that waited and wished for something different. An improvement on the existing structure, not a wholly re-written, bloated piece of code that forces users slow down, rather than speed up. To upgrade hardware, rather than sticking with cutting edge machinery that worked just a year ago.

Adobe, I’m giving you the official middle finger, and winner of the 2009 Bloaties! The BloatWare Award for bloated, horrible software, started by myself as a joke, but I can now see the need for an actual award! (you can contact me via the contact button at the upper right of the page to have your little bloatware trophy statue mailed to you.)

I could go in depth, and pick apart every reason that CS4 Flash is a total and complete failure, (along with the other CS4 bloatware apps), but I feel that by simply googling CS4 Lag, you’ll find enough ammunition in the forums out there, to serve better than another rant from yours truly.

The new contender? The company actually paying attention to animator’s needs? TOONBOOM Inc! That’s right!

I‘m testing out the new “ToonBoom Animate” which has all the features that Flash users have begged for for years ( now with symbols! ) and then some! A true 3d camera for multiplane, extremely detailed and comprehensive bones system, (one that dwarfs the awkward and unconfigurable version in CS4 Flash! ) fantastic effects, and a host of other features that I’ll mention in a future review.

Sorry Adobe, you’ve dropped the ball. No, actually, you bought the ball, bolted a lot of bloated horrible fat lazy code onto it, covered it in fancy ribbons.. sprayed it with perfume..  put lipstick on a pig!

So long from the animation community Adobe. Failure!
