Platform…

Been working like crazy, and trying to find time to go to the Portland International Platform Animation Festival, happening right now!

One of the funniest moments of the fest so far, was actually outside the theatre. I did a quick sketch of this woman, leaning into her MacBook, trying to talk using voice over ip. She didn’t have a microphone, so she had her whole head / ear cocked up against the keyboard, trying to talk and listen to someone over portland’s city wide free MetroFi wifi service. Hilarious! Portland is home to many famous cartoonists and animators, as documented by the great film archivist, Dennis Nyback, and his Oregon Cartoon Institute!

There’s also a great display of one of my favorite cartoonist’s works: Basil Wolverton! I snapped some pictures from his original artwork using my Sony Ericsson K790A phonecam.

Most of these were illustrations of the apocalypse done for a christian organization of some sort, -others done for MAD, and PLOP! magazine. It’s very cool to see the level of detail this guy was able to put into his work. All that crosshatching, stippling, and to see the actual scale he worked at.. Fantastic!
