Chumby’s guts!

Ok ok.. sorry for the slight vacation. I’ve been off in animation land, working away.. and all the while.. the little CHUMBY has been blooping and bleeping away on my desk here next to me..

The Chumby. What can I say about it? Think about it as an “active” alarm clock. An alarm clock that is configurable, and sits inside a bean bag.

guts.jpgPop open the Chumby, and you see a 9 volt battery, (it’s temporary backup, in case your power goes out briefly) and a bunch of cables leading to the internal “squeeze sensor” and rear USB / audio / power jacks.

Here’s the back of El Chumby..

Here’s the Chumby running in it’s default “Alarm Clock” mode..

The screen is a touch screen.. First, you squeeze the sensor, and the main menu comes up..

Here, I click the Network Setup button..

.. and that’s it. Chumby is online!

Essentially, the Chumby connects to the internet.. and downloads a set of “widgets”. These are all created in flash (limited to flash 6.0), and can be anything from something that grabs the local weather, to recipies (with a link to e-mail them back to yourself to print), to your netflix account list.

The possibilities seem endless. However.. I was disappointed by the following..

1: A slow slow CPU! Flash only plays at about 12 frames per second.. if that. A lip synch test I did with some animation was a disaster. If I really design down for the Chumby, I think I may get some action out of it but.. eesh..! Difficult.

2: Cycling widgets. Each widget spends about 5 seconds on the screen, rotating through everything, with no ability to pause. This may be fixed in future Chumby firmware updates, sent by Chumby Inc. (The Chumby is based on an embedded form of Linux)

3: No built in web browser. It’d be great to see a very stripped down java based browser of some sort.. just for kicks.
The Chumby! It ain’t perfect.. but people are writing new little apps for it all the time.. my “production model” might not be final.. that is.. it may in the future have a faster cpu, the ability to play mp3′s (It already has stereo speakers, and plays stereo audio via flash).. and much.. more?

I don’t like the Chumby.

I love it!

So in short, I haven’t hacked it, broken it, or had sex with it.. ……yet.
